Independent Investigation Guidelines

Step 1: Create a Question

  • What do you want to find out?
  • Does your question relate to the topic?
  • Can you develop an experiment to answer your question?
  • Does your question make sense? Is it confusing?

Step 2: Hypothesis

  • What do you think will happen?
  • Make your hypothesis SMART! (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Result-Oriented, Time-bound)
  • Use complete sentences.

Step 3: Procedure

  • What steps will you follow to find an answer?

· BE SPECIFIC! Label your steps using 1, 2, 3, etc.

· Would someone else be able to follow your directions?

  • How will you collect your data?
  • How will you ensure reliable results?
  • What safety issues need to be addressed?

________ pts.

The problem is clearly identified and stated.

The problem is identified but is stated in an unclear manner.

The problem is partially identified and stated in an unclear manner.

The problem is erroneous.

No attempt has been made.

HYPOTHESIS

________x 2=

________ pts.

The hypothesis is SMART.

The hypothesis slightly fails to be SMART.

The hypothesis fairly fails to be SMART.

Never follows the SMART rule.

No attempt has been made.

IDENTIFICATION OF VARIABLES

________x 2=

________ pts.

All variables were correctly identified and no variable was missed out.

All variables except one were correctly identified and one variable was missed out.

The identification of the independent and dependent variables were incorrect and some variables were missed out

Identification of variables was incorrect and missed out a lot of variables.

No attempt has been made.

MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES

________x 3=

________ pts.

Enumerates all materials needed. Procedures are listed in a logical order. Each step is numbered and is a complete sentence.

Enumerates some of the materials needed. Procedures are listed in a logical order, but steps are not numbered and are not in complete sentences.

Enumerates few materials needed. Procedures are listed but not in a logical order and are difficult to follow.

Have not enumerated the materials needed. Procedures do not accurately list the steps of the experiment.

No attempt has been made.
