Performance Task No. 2 (3rd Quarter)

Matter Magazine is the top magazine for getting the scoop on matter. Mrs. May, the head of the said magazine is running late on this month’s edition of Matter Magazine. She is desperately looking for articles that can explain how to identify the common changes that can take place. She is not only looking for a written explanation, but illustrations as well. As a journalist, you will investigate the changes that matter undergoes and create an article for the magazine to share your findings. You have to give a written explanation and illustrate changes that can occur in matter. Once this month’s edition has been published it will go under review by second grade classes. The following parts of your article will be graded: title of the article; content knowledge and accuracy; examples of change in matter and illustrations.

Science Investigation No. 3

INVESTIGATION NO. 3

WHAT TO DO

In this investigation, each group is expected to:

1. make a solar still based on the procedures below;

2. come up with another design of solar still that is more efficient than the first one by making provisions on the parts;

3. state the problem of the groups investigation depending on what aspects of the solar still would they like to modify;

4. formulate hypotheses;

5. cite the variables;

6. add some steps on the procedures depending on what aspects of the solar still would they like to modify;

7. make an illustration of the solar stills;

8. gather data and make conclusions.

THE SOLAR STILL

INTRODUCTION

In this activity you will build a solar still and find out how it can purify water. You will be challenged to use your knowledge and do researches on how to build a more efficient solar still.

Water covers most of the Earth (about 70%), but almost all of it is in the oceans and is salty. Much of the water on land or in the ground is also salty or otherwise unsuitable for human use. The challenge of finding ways to purify water is increasing with human population.

The solar still is a device that that uses solar energy to purify water. Different versions of a still are used to desalinate seawater, in desert survival kits and for home water purification.

Materials

1. Large metal or plastic bowl

2. Small, shallow glass or cup

3. Cling film (wider than the bowl)

4. Small stone (pebble)

5. Hot water

6. Food dye

7. Salt

Procedures

Part A- Building a Solar Still

1. Add a measured volume of hot water (about 1 cm) to the bowl.

2. Add some food colouring and about a teaspoonful of salt to the water in the bowl.

3. Take all the equipment out to a sunny, level place.

4. Place the glass or cup in the middle of the bowl making sure no water splashes into it.

5. Cover the bowl loosely with cling film, sealing the film to the rim of the bowl. (Use tape or string if necessary.)

6. Place the stone in the middle of the film above the cup.

7. Place the whole set-up in direct sunlight. Leave the still for at least an hour (the longer the better) and then check that there is some water in the cup.

8. Take the still back indoors, remove the cling film and take out the cup without splashing any water into or out of the cup.

9. Measure the amount of water in the cup.

10. Observe the colour of the water in the cup and test it for salt.

11. Measure the amount of water in the cup.

Part B – The Design Challenge

1. Your challenge is to modify or make a more efficient solar still than the one that you made in Part A.

2. Write down some ideas about how you might improve the still. For example you might try using different coloured containers to find out which absorbs the sunlight most efficiently or make some provisions on the different parts of the solar still and get better results compared to the ordinary still.

3. Procedures in Part A maybe followed but make sure to include the provisions that you made with your solar still.
